Staying focused in college isn’t always an easy thing to do. I recently seen my cousin who is a senior in high school and is finally taking school seriously and trying to plan for the challenges she will face in college.

College is frustrating.  Being a parent while being in college can be downright disencouraging.  It often includes what seem like endless days, starting before the sun comes up and not ending until well after midnight:  class early in the day, work ‘till midnight, then homework, or not start…

While it should feel like it’s starting to be cool, crisp fall weather, we’re still stuck with the mugginess that comes with Arkansas summer. Eventually, things will get back to cooler temperatures, but this brings up something that I admit I have trouble with myself. Trying to manage yourse…

As a freshman in college, I had tunnel vision. I knew I would be in college for four years, and it didn’t seem like college would end.

I bit at my thumb nail as I waited for the receptionist behind the desk to get a clipboard of forms ready for me to fill out and sign, stating that I need help. I quietly sat down in the waiting area and began to recount why I was back here after doing so good for nearly a year. Did I really…

During my interview for Presidential Leadership Fellows last week, I was asked if I’d change anything about my time at UCA. I stopped to think for a few seconds, but I realized there isn’t anything I’d change. I have seen an immense amount growth in myself during my years at UCA. In high sch…

Being a college student, or even a young adult, chances are that you’ve heard about Tinder and how it works. But if not, let me give you some background to start out.

I have been in college for almost four years now, and I’m still two years away from graduating with a bachelor’s degree. How did that happen? Well the short answer is work. My first semester of college was a total failure. I didn’t know what I was getting in to. It didn’t help that my family…

As the semester progresses, I admit that it can be hard to keep up with my classes. The spring semester always feels a lot quicker than the fall I know that students can have trouble maintaining a constant work habit with how many assignments stack up, and it’s happened to me multiple times.…

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a sad day for single people. We have created this messed-up idea that Valentines Day has to be this over-the-top romantic holiday with the loves of our lives. Trust me, it is hard to check social media and not get sad when you see what other couples are doi…

One of the biggest things I have learned in my three years in college so far is to enjoy the simple things in life, and that was reiterated this week when I watched the musical “Kinky Boots.”

Until my junior year of college, I’d always felt ashamed of my abilities to read and write. I felt like a failure because I wasn’t gifted in math and science. I’ve even had strong thoughts of changing my major. Unfortunately, this is a dilemma many other writers and artist share. STEM educat…

Movies like “Pitch Perfect,” “Love & Basketball,” “The Rules of Attraction” and “Stomp the Yard” all give pre-college teenagers a false sense of what it’s actually like to date while in college. Instead of a romance film, these college courtships mimic cheesy romantic comedies (heavy on …

When I was younger — when the pressure of six grade felt as if it would be the greatest milestone of my life — I could consume a 500-page plus book within the span of hours. I warped into this world of C.S. Lewis’ fiction and double-ended fantasy and — dare I say it — the candidly loved-but-…

Getting a new franchised restaurant in your area is like opening a new bag of Doritos chips — you have a general idea of what you’re getting, but you really hope you get a good bag with a few extra chips.

When I started college as a thirty-year-old freshman with three children, I thought of those viral stories you’d see on the internet with the amazing professor who steps up, allowing a child to come to class with a parent and even going so far as to hold the child while lecturing.

The statement “if you can’t love yourself, you can’t love someone else” has always been a touchy and sometimes annoying phrase to me. How do I explain that I have loved and do love many people, but I can’t seem to love who I am?
